Well. I’m officially a job seeker, oh and did you know, for this, i get an allowance!?? £50 a week. What good that is supposed to do me I really don;t know, but hey, onwards and upwards in the job hunting!!! Anyway, on a more relevant note, I’m currently working on a couple of freelance jobs at the moment, most significantly a identity and website for a wedding videographer company called “draigg” I’m at the development stages at this moment in time, however there is one key underlying theme which is dragons, seeing as the word dragon in welsh is “draigg”. What dragons have to do with weddings… im not sure. but hey. I’m not going to argue with it!!! Images of whats been done so far are to follow!!!

OK, its getting the time of the year now where I need a creative brief to get my mind ticking and my portfolio bulging. I have managed already to wangle a bit more cheeky freelance, so that’s good news, but I really need some ideas for my own self initiated project. I mean…come on seriously. This should be so unbelievably easy for me to come up with seeing as I could now practically do a project on anything I wanted, yet i’m finding myself staring down the barrel of the same problem I had for my final major project at uni six months ago. I have got so much choice. I know i’m going to do something bold. I know i’m going to do something typographic, Maybe I will re-visit an old project. one idea i have had is a project to make a book called 10. Basically it would be a top 10 book, based on my top 10 of anything and everything…maybe thats what I will do . lets see……..

Its not alright

So, it’s all go on the job front. I have officially begun to sift my way through large contact lists, and pick out a some companies to try my luck with! One job I have looked at is based in Yorkshire, and upon enquiry about the position they informed me that they would only be looking at applicants living in the Yorkshire area! Surely they are cutting of their noses to spite their faces, unless west Yorkshire has suddenly become the creative hub of the Planet. Who knows hey, but, all I can fathom is that if people are willing to re-locate for a job it shows nothing but large amounts of commitment to the job at hand !

I’m also pretty sure my loyal army of one reader ( me) hasn’t increased yet. Perhaps i need to offer incentives to people for reading. what they would be, i’m not yet sure! Free iPod ?? I have also today begun to think about the possibilities of self initiated to projects totide me over for the next few months until work becomes available!! Ideas would be appreciated..if anyone is even reading this haha. I have even written on lily allens blog suggesting that perhaps she may let me design her album covers! yea! right !

AQUA 2010

Ok, so this could well be one of my last bits of work for asset. I have now completed the design for this logo, after 2/3 days working on it, lots of tweaks and adjustments to get the image just right. I have gone for a slightly more abstract image, combining leafs and raindrops to make a pattern that can be likened to a lilly/ water flower. I have used both a mixture of serif and sans serif typeface in the design. It was important to include a serif typeface as I have used the letter Q in aqua’s serif to make a wave. I have tried to upload a version of this design into this post however unfortunately i have been unable to get the colour to re-produce correctly, so check back on my portfolio page, and eventually It should be on there i would imagine!!!

The Weeks ahead

I am currently approaching the end of my 3 month contract with Asset graphics, and it looks like it’s time to start rummaging around for jobs! (easier said than done at the moment) I am looking now at probably trying to find something in the South West/Wales area so I can be with my fiancee, but hey , beggars can’t be choosers and all that Jazz. I have just created a profile on creative pool to try and get my stuff noticed a bit more, whether it will or not is a completely different matter, how depressing!

Never mind, on a more positive note, I have now been handed the task of working on the logo identity for “AQUA 2010, the uk’s water gardening and trade event” , so watch this space for lily pads and goldfish galore!

To be honest, I’m not sure if even my mum is following this blog anymore, so, if , by any chance anyone is reading this stuff, leave me a comment, if not, il just have to carry on scrawling away on my beloved MacBook Pro for my own entertainment !

Ok, so this will be the hardest part of getting my blog back up and running…finding a loyal army of people to read what I have been up to. So far my followers include: My mum. Great! Lets see If we can get this off the ground quickly!! I’m thinking perhaps cheating, maybe putting key phrases as ” 75% off dominos pizza voucher” will direct google traffic my way!!! lets see :p

My inspirations are all around me. I don’t find just artists inspirational. I find Pictures, Magazines, Newspapers, Art, almost anything that looks good an inspiration to me. I am completely open minded when it comes to design and strive surroud myself with beautiful things.

Here are a few of the things that i find inspirational to me, things that have helped me develop as a designer, things that have helped me through the long nights and tight deadlines.

Helvetica Has greatly influenced me over the last two years. Helvetica ws first made apparent to me on its 50 year anniversary. I was already aware of the typeface,but the hype about it at the time inspired me to persist in experimentation ever since, and so far it has been a long and happy relationship!

The work of Massimo Vignelli was a great inspiration to me during my exploration of Helvetica. He pioneered the brand behind American Airline using just this font. I never get tired of looking at his typographic treatments.

The unique work of Erik Spiekermann is another favourite of mine. The unique typographic treatments and consideration to all his works fascinates me, as does his general general approach to graphic deign. Being a self confesed “typomaniac” reflects throughout all of his work.

The work of Alan Fletcher , yet another typographer has been of great intrest to me since the start of university. He uses much more illustrative treatments to his design works than the designers previously mentioned,. His works provide me with a large spectrum of ideas and a good basis for new ways of thinking.

Neviile Brody’s work is renowned worldwide, and he again is a typographer. He uses a much more raw approach to his work and in essence creates alot more texture than other designers, something i tried to incorperate into my business cards.

Stefan sagmeister is my favourite artist in an illustrative content, the pure guts and willingness to shock is an inspiration ton to me, and has lead him to produce many dramatic peices to the like of which i aspire, as illustraton is one of my personal weak points.
